Protect the Clouded Leopard Nepal
Project Leader: Yadav Ghimirey
Location: Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal
Funding Agency: European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA), Switzerland
Duration: 2020-2022
The Lower Annapurna Conservation Area (1400-3500 meters) shelters over 30 mammal species, including the globally threatened clouded leopard. Over 800 households rely on the forest for timber, fuel-wood, medicinal plants, livestock herding, and illegal hunting, leading to forest degradation and human-wildlife conflicts. In collaboration with Madi Rural Municipality, the project aims to diversify livelihoods (nature guiding, homestays, eco-tourism) and reduce human-wildlife conflict (training, deterrent kits, fox lights).
Engaging seven schools, two Conservation Area Management Committees, and 4000 locals, the project produced an illustrated booklet, celebrated Clouded Leopard Day, built local capacity, and patrolled habitats to remove snares.
