Rain Water Harvesting
 

June 2015, Green School Team installed Rain Water Harvesting model at Shree Rastriya Primary School, Chaughara, Charkilla, Korak-5, Chitwan. Rain water collected from the gutter will be stored in a tank and will further be used for school garden along side. In recent years, rain water harvesting has been a boon to manage water crisis in many parts of Nepal.

   
 

Butterfly Conservation Poster

  Nepal is home to approximately 655 species of butterflies and at least 80 species are found in Korak VDC, Chitwan. Despite many threats, conservation initiatives are very rare in Nepal. Green School team recently published posters to enhance butterfly conservation knowledge of stakeholders. The poster highlights both their importance and conservation measures.
   
  Agriculture Learning Class
  On June 26, 2015 Green School Team hired Mr Sher Bahadur Tamang, local farmer of Korak VDC to teach school students about food and farm awareness. Mr Tamang took class to grade VII students of Shree Rastriya Ma Vi, Swamitar, Korak-9, Chitwan where he shared his experience and knowledge about agricultural practices in Korak. He explained about vegetable garden, bee keeping, bio-pesticides, organic farming, community forestry and so forth.
   
  Essay on “Experience of Earthquake"
 

In May 2015, Green School Project had announced essay competition at Shree Rastriya Ma Vi, Swamitar entitled ‘Earthquake’ among lower secondary and secondary level students. While at Shree Rastriya Primary School, Charkilla, Korak VDC students were given the topic “Experience of Earthquake". We received over 50 essays in response to the call. After evaluation, Namaraj Tamang, Rijan Chepang and Basanti Praja came first, second and third from secondary level. In lower secondary category, Urmila Tamang, Juni Praja and Bibek Praja were ranked first, second and third. Finally from primary level, Buddha Bahadur Praja, Sarita Sunar and Abin Sunar came first, second and third respectively. Back in Charkilla, Bishal Chepang, Milan Chepang and Manoj Chepang came first, second and third respectively. The winners were awarded with prize on June 15, 2015.

   
  Training on Environment Education and Integrated Teaching
  June 2015, Green School Project organized two days ‘Teachers' Training on Environment Education and Integrated Teaching’ to all the teachers of Shree Rastriya Ma Vi, Swamitar and Shree Rastriya Primary School, Charkilla, Korak VDC, Chitwan. The training dealt on varied themes from understanding the environment, ecological processes, human relationship with nature, sustainable development, eco-clubs, wall magazine preparation and so forth. Mr Bal Mukunda Pokhrel and Mr Sulav Adhikary facilitated the training at Regional Training Centre, Birendranagar-2, Chitwan.
   
  Sport Materials Distribution
  In June, Green School Project handed over sport materials to Shree Rastriya Ma Vi, Swamitar and Shree Rastriya Primary School, Charkilla, Korak VDC, Chitwan. Sport materials include; Badminton set, Volley ball set, Carrom Board, TT Bat, Skipping Rope & so forth.
   
  Nature Painting Competition
  On June 11 and 12, Green School Team carried out Nature Painting Competition at Shree Rastriya Primary School and Shree Rastriya Ma Vi, Swamitar, Korak VDC, Chitwan. Since this was an open free style themed competition, students made paintings of landscapes, mountains, forest, ecosystem, birds, butterflies, flowers etc. The competition was categorized among primary, lower secondary and secondary level. Winners were awarded with prize on June 15, 2015.
   
  Hiking-Pollination
  On June 11, 2015 Green School Team carried out hiking under theme ‘Pollination’ to grade III students of Shree Rastriya Primary School, Charkilla, Korak VDC, Chitwan. Started with a briefing session on what pollination is, who are the pollinators? , their importance, threats and what we can do? , students had fun time hiking to nearby open space and see pollinators in the surrounding area. Globally, bees are the major pollinators along with other vertebrates: bats, monkeys, birds, rodents, squirrels etc.
   
  Hiking-Health and Sanitation
  On June 9 & 10, 2015 Green School Team carried out hiking under theme ‘Health and Sanitation’ to grade 7 students of Shree Rastriya Ma Vi, Swamitar and grade 4, 5 students of Shree Rastriya Primary School, Charkilla, Korak VDC, Chitwan. The hike was facilitated by Mr Roshan Chaudhary, Social Mobilizer, RRN Chitwan. The Swamitar group hiked to Kali khola area of Korak VDC and visited 17 households for group discussion about health and sanitation status. Students visited nearby water reserve tank where the community is dependent on, found it to be safe and knew every house hold owns a toilet. On the contrary, the Charkilla group visited around 36 households among which eight lacked toilet and other basics of health and sanitation.
   
  Catapult Collection
   
  May 2015, Green School Team initiated catapult collection campaign at Swamitar, Kirantar and Charkilla in coordination with local community and Green Youth of Korak VDC, Chitwan. Most of the youths (aged group 8-18 yrs) have returned their catapults and pledged to boycott their use in future. In return, we provided them sports materials. In Nepal, approximately 25% students use catapults to kill the birds.
   
  World Environment Day
  On June 5, Green School Team held various activities to observe World Environment Day 2015 with Eco-club/committees and others at Shree Rastriya Primary School, Charkilla, Korak-5, Chitwan. Eco-club/committee members were trained on making bio-pesticide using local materials while other students of the school, participated in collecting litters around the school and placing them in rubbish pits. The kitchen-cum-floral garden built few months ago was supplemented with planting few flowers and vegetable seedlings. Also, the compost manure (built three months ago and ready to use now!) was excavated and placed around plants in the garden. Finally, we installed our compost bin structured around cement rings with metal roofing. All the bio-degradable waste from school will now be stuffed inside the compost bin.
   
  Sharing Workshop
  On May 29, Green School Project carried out sharing workshop at the Regional Training Centre of Birendranagar, Chitwan. The theme of the workshop was to disseminate findings of research grantees of the project who studied on varied subjects like Disaster Risk Reduction, Drivers of Deforestation and Forest Degradation, Local Food Culture, Herbal Medicine, Butterfly Inventory and Climate Change & Local Adaptation. The workshop had been attended by representatives from FECOFUN, Shanti Griha Nepal, RRN, Journalists, Teachers from two Green Schools, Eco-club/committee members of Korak VDC and Green School staffs.
   
  Study Tour
  Green School Project carried out Study Tour with Eco-club/committee members and teachers of Shree Rastriya Ma Vi, Swamitar and Shree Rastriya Primary School, Chaughara, Charkilla, Korak VDC, Chitwan. The 5 days (April 11-15, 2015) motivational tour for nature conservation followed the route from Birendranagar - Marsyangdi Hydropower Station - Govardhan Sharma Organic Agriculture Resource Center (GOARC) Damauli - Pokhara (Mahendra Cave, Bat Cave, Mountain museum etc.) - IPM farmer school (Syangja) - Madan Pokhara Community Forest (Palpa) - Lumbini (Green Youth Nepal) - Nawalparasi (Amaltari, Vulture Restaurant) to Birendranagar, Chitwan. Interaction of the visitors with distinguished personalities in nature conservation was the highlight of the tour along with sightseeing.
   
  School Gardening
  Green School Project built a school garden in coordination with Eco-club/committee members at Shree Rastriya Primary School, Chaughara, Charkilla, Korak-5, Chitwan. Flowers like Croton, Rose, Marigold, Morning glory, Hibiscus, Petunias etc have been planted at the garden including others as Juniper, Christmas tree and varieties of Cynodon dactylon (Dubo). A kitchen garden runs sideways that has seedlings grown of vegetables as Bitter gourd, Sponge gourd, Snake gourd, Okra (Lady’s finger), Cucumber, Beans etc.
   
  Nature Hike
  Green School Team took students of Shree Rastriya Ma Vi, Swamitar and Shree Rastriya Primary School, Charkilla to Nature Hike on March 11 and 12, 2015. The hike started from respective schools to nearby forest and covered varied themes, viz. Birding, Plant Identification and Butterfly watching.
   
  Herbal Medicine Preparation
  On March 13, Green School Team carried out one day ‘Herbal Medicine Preparation Training’ to Eco-clubs/committees of Shree Rastriya Ma Vi, Swamitar and Shree Rastriya Primary School, Charkilla, Chaughara, Korak VDC, Chitwan. Mr Dipak Gurung - MD, Life Care Hospital, Bharatpur was the lead trainer of the program. He point out the importance of herbal medicine, healthy diet and focused over practical session of preparing Triphala churna, Trikatu churna, Nisamalaki churna, Amalaki churna and so on. Participants of the training were pleased to gain hands-on experience of preparing such Ayurvedic medicines.
   
  Visit to Local Model Farms
  February 28, 2015, Green School Team carried out visit to local model farms in Chitwan district with Eco-club members of Shree Rastriya Ma Vi, Swamitar and Shree Rastriya Primary School, Chaughara, Charkilla, Korak VDC. Purpose of the visit was to provide information to students about organic farming, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), integrated farming practice and so on by taking them directly to the field plots. The field trip followed the route from Birendranagar - Chainpur, Baheri - Fulbaari - Rampur Campus - Abloom Flora Farm to finally Birendranagar.
   
  Training on Composting
  On February 24 and 25, Green School Team provided Training on Composting to Eco-clubs/committees of Shree Rastriya Ma Vi, Swamitar and Shree Rastriya Primary School, Chaughara, Charkilla, Korak VDC, Chitwan. Mr Man Kumar Chaudhary, Agriculture Technician was the lead trainer of the program. Participants of the training gained hands-on experience of composting from digging a pit to fill in the same with organic residues. The end product (manure) will be ready in three months time.
   
  World Wetlands Day 2015-Pampha River Cleaning
  On the occasion of World Wetlands Day 2015, Green School Team conducted Pampha River Clean Up program at Korak-5, Swamitar, Chitwan with students from Shree Rastriya Ma Vi. Participation reached a total of around 200 students, teachers and staffs of FON Nepal. They lend helping hands in cleaning up the litters over a 2 km stretch of the Pampha River.
   
  Nature Bus
  On January 31, 2015 Green School Team carried out Nature Bus program with Eco-club students of Shree Rastriya Ma Vi, Swamitar and Shree Rastriya Primary School, Chaughara, Charkilla, Korak VDC, Chitwan. Nature Bus is something like going on a safari in the wild seeing flora and fauna while learning the importance of biodiversity and conservation. Mr Uday Chandra Aryal, The President, Nature Guide Association, Sauraha led the excursion as prime facilitator. The trip followed the route from Ratnanagar, Tandi - Beeshazari Lake - Kasara (Gharial Breeding Center) - Milijuli Community Forest (Kumal Lake) - Elephant Breeding Center - Kumroj VDC to Birendranagar, Chitwan. The participants were delighted to join Nature Bus since they happened to observe wildlife in the woods at closer distance and natural heritage sites.
   
  Agro-Hike
  On January 18 & 19, 2014 Green School Team carried out Agro-Hike with students of Shree Rastriya Ma Vi, Swamitar, Korak-9 and Shree Rastriya Primary School, Chaughara, Charkilla, Korak-5, Chitwan. Mr. Man Kumar Chaudhary, Technician (Rural Reconstruction Nepal, RRN) facilitated the hiking. The session included information on kitchen garden, model plots, organic farming, bio-pesticide and so forth.
   
  Butterfly Identification
  On November 9 and 10, 2014 Green School Team carried out Butterfly Identification Hike at Shree Rastriya Primary School, Chaughara, Charkilla, Korak-5 and Shree Rastriya Ma Vi, Swamitar, Korak-9, Chitwan. Mr. Rishi Baral, volunteer (FON Nepal) facilitated the hiking. We recorded 33 species of butterfly at Chaughara, while 39 species were documented from Swamitar during our two days hiking.
   
  Research Grant
  On September 29, Green School Team signed contracts with Research Grantees of the Green School Project. The grantees delivered respective presentations on different thematic areas at Friends of Nature (FON) Nepal’s office at Birendranagar-2, Chitwan. The duration of the research work and final reporting is 6 months.
   
  Green voice-Radio Program
  On September 24, 2014 Green School Team signed contract with Kalika FM Pvt Ltd for starting a radio program on Green School called ‘Green Voice’. The agreement was carried out at Kalika FM Pvt Ltd, Bharatpur-10, Chitwan. The radio show will be aired last Monday of every month (Nepali calendar) at 7:00-7:30 PM on Kalika FM 95.2 MHz.

  September 2014, Essay Competition at Shree Rastriya Primary School, Chaughara, Charkilla, Korak-5, Chitwan entitled as “Define forest. How can you help to conserve it? ". The competition was held among grade 4 and 5 students. Total 20 essays in response to the call were received. After evaluation, Anita Chepang, Som Maya Chepang and Niruta Chepang came first, second and third respectively. The winners were awarded with prize on September 18, 2014.
   
  Distribution of Sports Materials-Shree Rastriya Primary School
  On Sep 18 2014, Green School Project distributed sport materials to Shree Rastriya Primary School, Chaughara, Charkilla, Korak-5, Chitwan. Sport materials include:

  Plantation
  Eco-club members and grade 7-10 students of Shree Rastriya Ma Vi, Swamitar, Korak-9, Chitwan (around 40 participants) carried out plantation program on Sep 5, 2014. Sapling and seedlings of Mangosteen (8), Camphora (4), Guava (15) and Ashoka (4) were provided. The plantation was done on the unoccupied spots inside and on the periphery of school.
   
  Herping
 

Herping- act for searching herpetofauna and learning about them, was carried out on Sep 11 and 12, 2014 with grade 4-5 students of Rastriya Primary School, Korak-5 and grade 8 students of Rastriya Ma Vi, Korak-9, Chitwan. Species like Black spined toad, Common garden lizard, Maskey’s burrowing frog, Common Indian skink, Terai cricket frog, Indian bull frog, Spotted litter skink & Skittering frog were recorded.

   
  Third Monthly Meeting
  Swamitar Eco-club(Shree Rastriya Ma Vi) held its third monthly meeting on August 31, 2014. The meeting arrived with a conclusion to carry out plantation program inside and on the periphery of school. At the same time, members of the eco-club made commitment to look after the plantation region.
   
  Plantation Campaign
  July 20, 21 and 22 -Chaughara, Korak VDC, members of Eco-committee/club (60 participants) carried out three days plantation campaign. Sapling and seedlings of diverse plants, viz. Lime (300), Butter Nut (100), Lemon (300), Coffee (150), White Cedar (300), Bamboo (350), Koiralo (200), Guava (300) and Cinnamon (1000) was provided. The plantation campaign involved uprooting of the weeds in the plantation site, seedling/sapling transportation from the nursery supported by Green School Project, and subsequent plantation.
   
  Brefing of Green School
  "Mr. Raju Acharya, Team Leader of Green School, outlined about the ongoing activities to Ms. Annette Wulf (Funding Advisor of WHH). She had visited (12 June, 2014) the office of FON Nepal located at Birendranagar and Shree Rastriya Ma Vi (Secondary School) where the 'Green School' concept is being piloted."
   
  Essay Competition
  June 2014, 'Green School Project' announced 'Essay Competition' at Shree Rastriya Ma Vi, Swamitar, Korak-9, Chitwan entitled as "Describe an important environmental issue that your community is facing these days? How will you suggest coping with the situation?". The competition was held among grade 7, 8 and 9 students. 25 essays in response to the call was received. In the competitin Rijan Chepang, Buddhimaya Tamang and Romi Lama came first, second and third respectively.
   
  Clean-up Campaign
 

Green School Team carried out clean-up campaign at the premises of Rastriya Primary School, Chaughara, Charkilla, Korak – 5, Chitwan on June 23, 2014. Members of Eco-club/committee and school teachers participated in the program.

   
  Green Endowment Fund
  On June 17, 2014 Green Schools Project established the ‘Green Endowment Fund’ in collaboration with Rastriya Secondary School, Swamitar, Korak - 9, Chitwan. The purpose behind establishing this fund is to use the interest money of total capital in environmental conservation and awareness works sustainably by Eco-club/committee. At present, an amount of NPR 100,000 (25% contributed from eco-committee/school) has been deposited at Fixed Deposit Account of Yeti Development Bank Limited, Khurkhure branch, Chitwan.
   
  Bird Watching
 

On June 13, 2014 birding was carried out with grade ten students of Rastriya Secondary School, Swamitar, Korak - 9, Chitwan. Thirteen species of bird have been documented from the nearby Kalika community forest . It had been an enthralling experience for the twenty two students as they peered into the distant birds via telescope and binoculars. Birding was also carried out with students of grade four and five, Rastriya Primary School, Chaughara, Charkilla, Korak - 5, Chitwan. The students were thrilled to learn about the birds, their importance and fun of bird-watching via telescope and binocular.

   
  World Environment Day Celebration
 

To mark the World Environment Day June 5, 2014, Green School Team carried out clean-up campaign at the Rastriya Ma Vi, Swamitar, Korak – 9, Chitwan. About 450 students from the school, teachers, and eco-club/committee members participated in the program. Started initially with briefing on World Environment Day, the participants had a whale of a time in cleaning the school premises then moved along from Gairigaun to Linechowk of Korak VDC.
